Head north....We need results and we have a base of operations now. We can always upgrade later.

What information do we have about the city and the surrounding of our campsite? Can the data haven pass information from salvaged sources to us? Has there been an expedition to this region before?
I would prefere to establish a functioning camp, which can work/function and gather information on it's own befor we send out a team. In that case we might come up with more ressources to equip the team before they set off.

So I was right! It is the algae. We need to investigate the algae in the lake for 'scrubbing' capabilities

We have orders, I suggest we follow them. If we're valuable, we're worth protecting and supplying. Being self sufficient is great, but being self sufficient with back up is better.

We have orders to find technology that is: 1. organically based and 2. used for cleaning pollution.
So consider....
"A cursory examination of the lake shows that it is covered a vibrant algae swirling with colors, that burps out a chemical compound every now and again."
and
"...they discovered information about Hyacinth and the research that was going on there with biological agents that feed on toxic chemicals, so they sent you on your way."
Blam! What if the algae IS the technology we are looking for? We need to build a research platform.

Dennis- The information you have is vague and somewhat contradictory, being patched together from numerous sources. There has not been a Reclaimer expedition to Hyacinth before, no. There were more pressing matters to attend to before the data haven turned their eyes to Hyacinth.
Also- Cthulhu lies dreaming in the lake.

Sorry for the delay guys! My weekend was cramped. Here are the results for this weekend's poll: C- Build a research platform on the lake in order to investigate the fauna, exhausting 250 technology: 3 Votes A- Head north and explore the ruins of the old city, with all the risks and rewards that might involve: 2 votes D- Disobey orders: Rig up a water purification system, which also exhausts a resource point but has a monthly output of 75 food points each month: 2 votes. C it is, and when rolling on my random table I came up with a 1, which means tragedy has struck! It appears that the genetically altered algae has taken on many of the characteristics of the corrosive water that it feeds on, and research flotilla lasted less than a week before being swallowed by the lake. The damage was slow and steady, but when the flotilla finally succumbed to its corrosion it was a quick and fatal affair- twenty five of the encampments best researchers went down with all of the technology on rafts. The loud sucking the lake made as it took them down to their fate be heard for a kilometer around. In the last two weeks we have spent 250 technology points and lost 25 souls to the tragic events on the lake, only learning that the modified algae is just as dangerous as the pollution it is meant to clean up. The research did show that this adaptation is seemingly a corruption of the algae's intended purpose, so the mission is not to be deemed a failure at this time. We also ate 50 food (since the population is lower), so our totals are: 137.5 food, 2 resource points, 250 technology and 100 population. Here are our options as we mourn our fellows: A- Head north and explore the ruins of the old city, with all the risks and rewards that might involve. B- Head south to unexplored territory. It looks really scary down there. C- Attempt to salvage some of the flotilla that was lost to the lake, which could gain back as much as half of the 250 technology points spent. D- Disobey orders: Rig up a water purification system, which also exhausts a resource point but has a monthly output of 75 food points each month. E- Disobey orders: Spend 250 technology points to upgrade targeting systems in our weapons, giving a +1 to all combat rolls outside of the compound. And away we go, hopefully we fair better this week... poll.fm/3esn7

Can I join the outpost? Can a new member arrive?
By having a replenishing source of fresh water perhaps the algae's properties will revert to their original function. Perhaps they're just 'over worked'. Exploring is fun, but it seems that something is afoot out there in the wastes.

Thanks! it seems like if we're a special research envoy. I imagine we're composed of a small group of researchers and a larger contingent of escorts(soldiers). I say we send out a band of five scouts to do some 'lookin around' to see if a more suitable algea scrubber site exists or if any signs of this algea having mutated and existing in nature. If they don't come back we stay put as its evidence the surroundings are hostile. If we have some kind of 'detector' to pick up traces of whatever gas the algea was omitting maybe they could get a beed on something.

So....ah...I guess maybe the algae thing wasn't such a good idea.
heh.
It could have worked, I didn't know it was ALL random. Gee. We might as well head north.
Wait, no, I like water too....

Yeah yeah yeah I was writing the rule book and playing Skyrim In CYOA news: We had a decisive choice with the selection of: D- Disobey orders: Rig up a water purification system, which exhausts a resource point but has a monthly output of 75 food points each month. Our luck seems to be changing, this week we rolled a five! I am giving a +1 to that roll because of the information gleaned from our research attempts, so we end up with a modified six. The water purification system is humming along and we will be outputting 100 food a month, coupled with the skink jerky and salted capybara steaks we have as rations we should no longer be worrying about food for the duration of our excavation. The Rooks at the data haven begrudgingly admit that this was necessary for the morale of our group, but they insist on having results soon to make up for the list time. The poll for this Saturday will be exploration intensive. Now for the fun stuff- A- Head north into the city over land. Our scouts state that many of the building structures seem mostly intact, being built to weather the pollution. B- Head north into the city by taking small boats over the lake. Sight lines from our research flotilla had shown a slick, rocky area that might make a good scout encampment. C- Head south. Scary stuff, but it might give clues to what happened in Hyacinth before we venture inside. D- Send a runner to the Data Haven for more researchers and supplies The Poll- poll.fm/3f16hmmm skink jerky

And we have a winner! A- Head north into the city over land. Our scouts state that many of the building structures seem mostly intact, being built to weather the pollution. This week my random roll was also a success (another 5), so we have avoided another tragedy like we did on the lake. The first thing we notice when we head into the city is that the same algae that covers the lake has choked the sewer system. Luckily we now know to avoid these areas and we are able to to search the southernmost quadrant of the city. Hyacinth is remarkably intact, with only a few buildings showing serious signs of decay, but cracks are definitely showing in the foundation of the city. We uncover what was once a research facility that was working on microbes that feed on a variety of terrible chemicals. The bacteria might be all dead, but we still find a few dozen data scrolls that can be salvaged, and might have information that will prove valuable down the line. The Rooks will be pleased when the small group of Reclaimers we sent to return the data scrolls arrive. The puzzling thing about Hyacinth is why it seemingly was never occupied by people after the collapse. With so many intact buildings you would expect a permanent population of squatters, but all we have discovered are a few 'wanderers signs' etched into certain walls near areas choked with algae. Unfortunately we do not have anyone in our expedition that can read the old symbols, so we will have to wait for the group we sent to the data haven to return with answers. Here are our choices for the week: A- Explore the Western quadrant of Hyacinth, which our scouts think was the residential area B- Explore the Eastern quadrant of Hyacinth, closest to the lake C- Explore the Northern quadrant, an area unknown to us D- Head South, which is scary because of how many scouting expeditions have been lost down there, to answer your question Dennis E- Wait for the return of our detachment from the Data Haven. We will spend the down time upgrading our weapons and spending 250 technology. poll.fm/3f7tv

So how do we work that out? Maybe Anton's vote can be worth 1.1 as a tie breaker?

I ended up flipping a coin and it came up tails, making E- (Wait for the return of our detachment from the Data Haven. We will spend the down time upgrading our weapons and spending 250 technology) the winner this session. Ridiculously enough I also rolled a 6 on random.org, so our luck is still going strong. The results- Our Magpies (engineers) toiled day and night working on our weapons targeting systems. Through some luck and ingenuity they were able to complete the task and also work on the reliability of the battery packs they use with the extra time they had. Our weapons now add a +1 to offensive combat rolls AND if the first roll results in a 1 it will be rolled again. If the second roll is also a 1, well, them's the breaks. The Rooks at the data haven were pleased with the scrolls we brought back, even if they will still be deciphering their meaning for months. To show their continued support they have sent back our detachment with 50 more population, 100 food and 100 technology. Our scouts that have returned from the northern quadrant of Hyacinth have only brought back ghost-stories of 'shadows that move'. It appears to be an area meant for research and production. Our totals for the week end up as 237.5 food, 2 resource points, 100 technology and 150 population. Our monthly upkeep for population is currently 50 food. Here are the four options for this week, time for some action after our little break: A- Explore the Western quadrant of Hyacinth, which our scouts think was the residential area B- Explore the Eastern quadrant of Hyacinth, closest to the lake C- Explore the Northern quadrant, an area unknown to us D- Head South, which is scary because of how many scouting expeditions have been lost down there. poll.fm/3fhe8
