Hello everyone, I was a big fan of forum CYOA threads as a kid, so I thought we could wing one here. This will be a group effort, with each person getting a vote towards that sessions activities. Every week the settlement will be allowed two actions, one on tues and one on Friday, with voting in between. Communities will be based off of: Resource points- These will be things like generators, solar panels, etc that the community has scavenged and repaired. Population- The population of the settlement, when this hits zero it is game over Technology- The technology level for each faction means different things, but it generally has to do with weaponry and medical tech. Food- Also means different things (potentially gross for Stitchmen) but the population will require its number in food every month (a week in real life). First thing is to choose is a faction: In the beginning I will try to keep choices ambiguous until we appear to have a theme of Stakers who worship Chronos God of Death or a stylish band of Drifters named the Mad Hatters. The world is your oyster. I have set up random modifiers that involve success or defeat, and will come up with details for each one. In the spirit of the d6 the results will be as follows 1: tragic 2: unsuccessful 3-4: wash 5: successful and 6: boon. Remember to include a name for the settlement with your vote and we can have a little vote for that later as well. The faction beginning totals are as follows: A- Drifters start with 300 population, 500 food 200 technology and 1 resource point B- Reclaimers start with 125 population 250 food, 500 technology and 3 resource points C- Stakers 200 population, 600 food, 200 technology and 2 resource points D- Stitchmen 75 population, 150 food, 400 technology and 4 resource points Friday when the voting is over we can discuss our war plans. Every week after that we will adventure paths that end on will hopefully take us all over the place and feature some locations that are written for the book. Keep in mind this will be more role-play heavy and not a true indicator of the game itself. The chaos factor- if I feel like the CYOA is spinning it's wheels then I might throw in rivals, a plague, etc to get the party started. Ok let's have some fun!

Matt, I think you're showing your age here. I have no idea how his is going to work, but I choose Reclaimers.

Funny you mention that technical mayflies.
Like one quiet well known German Kaiser once said (somewhen around the WWI I think): I hold on to the horse, the automobile is only a temporary occurrence.

So we have a consensus! We ended up with zero votes for Drifters, Three votes for Reclaimers, one vote for Stakers and two votes for Stitchmen.
We are going to be playing the part of a Reclaimers community, a new settlement outside the old tech center of Hyacinth, and we have appropriated the old ghost city's name. Little is known about the old city except that it was the prototype 'scrubber city' that was made in an attempt to fight the wave of pollution at the end of the Big Push. We came from the West and there is a plant choked and acidic lake to our East.
Reclaimers start with 125 population 250 food, 500 technology and 3 resource points
Here are our options for this week, which will be the first two weeks of our expeditionary settlement:
A- Head north and explore the ruins of the old city, with all the risks and rewards that might involve. B- Establish a defensive perimeter around our community, exhausting one resource point permanently and giving us +2 to all defensive oriented rolls in the future. C- Rig up a water purification system, which also exhausts a resource point but has a monthly output of 75 food points each month. D- Spend 250 technology points to upgrade targeting systems in our weapons, giving a +1 to all combat rolls outside of the compound. E- Head south to unexplored territory.

this is cool. I think the defensive perimeter, water then weapons upgrades. After that, head north.

I vote for Water then defensive perimeter. There is yet nothing to defend. And without resources/food one can't sit out an attack.

What? Who used to say that? I don't even know what that means.... About the water...once we have it, someone will want to steal it

And the results are- B- Defensive perimeter: 3 votes C- Water supply: 2 votes A- Explore to the North: 1 vote After holding council we decide that it is prudent to establish a defensive perimeter around our excavation camp. We dedicate a week and a half to throw together a fence, sand bags and a few gun emplacements in case of invaders. The community rolled a 3 this week (I use random.org) so we did not suffer any losses or gain any benefits (no random explosions sadly). A cursory examination of the lake shows that it is covered a vibrant algae swirling with colors, that burps out a chemical compound every now and again. As our preparations wind down a runner comes with orders from the Data Haven. Leadership is requesting that we have results sooner rather than later, as they have numerous sites that could be explored for lost tech if they had more advanced pollution scrubbing technology at their disposal. The runner also states that he was not the first messenger sent, but the first one seemingly disappeared en route. In the last two weeks we used 62.5 food and 1 resource point, which leaves us with a total of 187.5 food, 2 resource points, 500 technology and 125 population. Here are our options for the week: A- Head north and explore the ruins of the old city, with all the risks and rewards that might involve. B- Head south to unexplored territory. It looks really scary down there. C- Build a research platform on the lake in order to investigate the flora, exhausting 250 technology D- Disobey orders: Rig up a water purification system, which also exhausts a resource point but has a monthly output of 75 food points each month. E- Disobey orders: Spend 250 technology points to upgrade targeting systems in our weapons, giving a +1 to all combat rolls outside of the compound. Here is the new poll, have fun guys! poll.fm/3eeb8-Matt

jturner: It's a crude translation of a idiom for "Life isn't always a bowl of cherries" Now we are left with food for about 6 more weeks. Okay... I think we should stop cooking three course meals every night

One way to lower the food output is to lower the population...

I voted for water again. But after thinking about it, that algae might be good for some pollution scrubbing too.
Who are these leaders anyway, and what do we owe to them? I thought we were like....scavengers.

I wouldn't really worry about canon in this little exercise, especially since a Reclaimer population of 125 would be huge in just an encampment.
And people taste good if you marinate them just right.

hmmm... Brains... Reminds me of some books by Thomas Harris
What does our camp look like? What technology is available to us?

Don't worry about cannons? I thought we could get gun emplacements...Hmpf.
Plus, nobody said anything about exercise. I, for one, demand at least a horse of not a spot in a nice shady wagon.
Since we don't know who the leaders are, I appoint myself Secretary of transportation. That would probably also make me the official despot as well, but I don't crave power, so I step down from that as soon as I give myself the life appointment to secretary of transportation. And immunity to any following despots, kings, emperors, presidents PMs and.... whatever.
So! I definitely get to ride in a covered wagon. With Rubber tires, none of this hoop wheel junk!
I didn't mean to get so off track. Matt, it's not good to eat people. We will go with pizza.

Your excavation team (large scale scavenging) was sent by a data haven almost 100 kilometers away. They, like many communities, have a council that dictates where their resources are best served. The data haven is near an area that once was as a dumping site for electronics during the Exodus, similar to ones you see in Ghana in present day. Unfortunately the ancient dumping site, and all of the spoils inside, is covered in a layer of toxic residue that the leaders of the data haven would like to remove. Going through their piles of undeciphered data scrolls they discovered information about Hyacinth and the research that was going on there with biological agents that feed on toxic chemicals, so they sent you on your way. Reclaimers use salvaged technology almost exclusively, and have become adept at repairing items that would be useless in the hands of anyone else, so they have a bunch of cool stuff like (still pretty unreliable) laser guns and shock gloves. Anymore questions so I can make up the answers on the fly?
